Three Friends Died in One Week

Three Friends Died in One Week

images-8I like Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon. All three of them have a special place in my memory. Yes, I know, they have sinned. So have I. I’m still the biggest sinner I know. God will now sort out the wages of their sin.

Michael was my age. When he was ten and rock’in the world I was ten and quite impressed as well as somewhat jealous. He gave this kid hope that anybody can be better if they try.

Farrah seemed lucky to me. She came from nowhere and seemingly became an icon overnight. Her story was a story that people dream about. She was an uber-star for a fleeting moment.

Ed found his place; it was second place and he made millions as a lovable sidekick. He showed me that you don’t have to be on top to succeed. He found his niche and made the most out of it.

This past week all three of my vicarious friends died within days of each other. It has been a sad week for me. I am sad for them. I am sad for their families. I’ve lost a father, and two brothers, as well as other family members. The pain and finality of death stings for those of us left behind.

But I also wonder what was the point of their lives and where they are now. Three people died in one week and now they are gone. They will fade in our memory as we follow in their footsteps. Most assuredly, death is coming.

Two-thousand years ago three other people died in one week. Their deaths were different than the three who died this week. Their deaths provide insight as well as hope for the rest of us who are marking our days.

All three of them were considered criminals.

  • Criminal #1 – He was a thief who rejected God. He died and went to hell.
  • Criminal #2 – He also was a thief, but he received God’s plan for salvation from the penalty of his sins and went to heaven.
  • Criminal #3 – He was Jesus and his death was a perfect sacrifice for anyone who is willing to accept his death on the cross as payment for their sin.

It is this third man who not only makes sense out of death, but gives us hope as we face death.

I have no way of knowing, but I hope Michael, Farrah and Ed chose the path of Criminal #2 which was to follow Criminal #3. If they did, then all has ended well for them. If they did not, then their life, death and the hereafter will amount to nothing more than a bundle of un-resolvable sadness.
