Sane Faith, By David Powlison

Powlison is brilliant!

When a diagnostic category is applied to your struggles, the medical sounding language turns your life experience into a “condition”. It’s something you “have” and others don’t. But the Bible speaks to people, not to conditions—and we all struggle. It’s a difference of degree—not of kind. The gospel reinforces our common humanity and our shared need for God-centered change. In part one of this article, David introduces us to five people and their diagnostic labels. He begins his response to their struggles using Psalm 23. He contrasts the life of care, hope, and connectedness offered by God—sane faith—to the life of isolation, disappointment and fear, offered by the “Antipsalm 23″.

The Number One Counselor-Thinker in the World Today

David Powlison is one of my heroes. In my opinion God has given the world today no greater gift in the counseling arena. I’ve heard him live many times and whenever he is speaking and I can get to him I go! I’ve read his books. I’ve talked with him privately and he is my number one audio request when it comes to counseling.

David is a wordsmith. He speaks with short bursts that manifest great light and clarity. Do an Amazon search for him and buy what he has written. It’ll be worth your while.

Here is an interview Mark Dever did with him awhile back. Give it a listen!

Please Get Me This for Christmas!!

There is not a piece of counseling literature on the market today better than The Journal of Biblical Counseling. I bought the CD ROM many years ago and it is still my number one go to resource.

It is the game changer you are looking for regardless of the issue at hand. The boys at CCEF have been writing (or folks writing for them) for decades. Now they have placed all of their journal articles in one searchable location.

Over the past few weeks I have gotten requests for differing topics. Inevitably I go to the JBC to research a needed solution. Below is a blurb from CCEF’s website about their CD ROM. If you can swing it I’d definitely add this to your counseling toolbox.

The JBC CD-ROM contains the 36 issues of the Journal of Pastoral Practice and 41 issues of the Journal of Biblical Counseling (through 2005). The 77 back issues include over 940 articles, book reviews, sermons, interviews, and editorials all for one low price.

JBC: all things counseling in one place

Several years ago I purchased the CD ROM version of the Journal of Biblical Counseling from CCEF. I had been a subscriber of the Journal for many years. When they came out with the CD version I didn’t hesitate to get a copy. This has been the most useful counseling resource I’ve ever come across. Its usefulness is seemingly limitless as well as broad.

Here is an excerpt from the CCEF website containing the CD version of the Journal: The JBC CD-ROM contains the 36 issues of the Journal of Pastoral Practice and 41 issues of the Journal of Biblical Counseling (through 2005). The 77 back issues include over 940 articles, book reviews, sermons, interviews, and editorials all for one low price.

Let me urge you to consider buying this CD. You can purchase it here.
