Case Study: She Buried Her Second Son in 10 Years

This is a true story. The counselee in this story is my mother

A lady comes to you for counseling. One year ago she buried her second son. (You can read the full story here.) He was shot five times by his wife. The court trial had come and gone. Her now former daughter-in-law received 300 hours community service for the murder. There were many lies told and she, more or less, got off free. The daughter of her former daughter-in-law received a $200K life insurance policy that was taken out on her son just months before the murder.

Ten years before this, she buried her oldest son who also was murdered. He broke into a home where a man was waiting on him and the son was shot in the head twice. The murderer never went to trial. The local police said that her son was one less criminal they had to deal with so they were not pursuing the one who committed the crime.

Now you are counseling a 59-year old lady who is struggling with anger, bitterness, gossip (hers and others) and the sovereignty of God. She is also working through the normal suffering and regret that comes with such turmoil.

Questions for you

  1. What would you tell her?
  2. How would you proceed?
  3. What would you want to guard her from?
  4. What would be your temptations in counseling this lady?
