The Poem: Up the Hill I Go

My friend, Maria Teresa Mirabal from the Dominican Republic, wrote this poem based on the truth that only at His cross can we find our rightful place with God. Maria is currently translating my articles into Spanish. You can find her translated articles by clicking For Our Hispanic Friends.

Up the Hill I go
in the midst of my fiercest storm,
because I know that in His presence
I find rest for my soul.

Up the Hill I go
before Him my sin to expose
for I know that in His mercy
I’ll get pardon for my soul.

Up the Hill I go
to give Him my life to control
because I know that He bestows
abundance of grace to my soul.

John Donne Rocks with Batter My Heart

I remember where I was when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, when Elvis died and when I proposed to my wife.

I also remember the first time I ever heard this poem. I was stunned. It rocked my spiritual world. It is my heart’s cry, then and now.

John Donne swung for the fences and touched’em all. I’m not sure you can do better unless you right God-inspired Psalms.

Batter my heart, three-person’d God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o’erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp’d town to’another due,
Labor to’admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captiv’d, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly’I love you, and would be lov’d fain,
But am betroth’d unto your enemy;
Divorce me,’untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you’enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;

Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.

I, like an usurped town, to another due,
