Last October I repented of the sin of slothfulness and since that time I have been walking out my repentance through a steady exercise and eating plan. This is NOT a diet and Lord willing, it is not just another phase in my life.
Like anger, self-righteousness, impatience and a host of other sins that I yield to, I trust this is more than a temporary season in life, only to revert back to old sin patterns.
It became obvious to me that I could not do this alone. I had ballooned to 25 pounds above my normal body weight and realized that leading my wife and serving my children had become a physical challenge due to my lack of stamina and desire.
Therefore, I repented of my sins and asked my friends to speak into my life in order to help me walk out my repentance.
Since that time God has shown mercy and I lost the 25 pounds and early in July ran my first 5K in 30 years! How kind of God.
Laziness Begins in the Heart
In order to keep on repenting we started a workout group of friends to not only help us maintain the “put on” part of our repentance, but we now have the privilege to serve them in their repentance from the “food gods”. Here is my short list of idols I have traditionally worshipped in the area of eating too much:
- Lack of self control
- Slothfulness
- Selfishness
- Comfort
- Pleasure
- Fear
- Discouragement
- Justification
- Self-deception
Fitness Friends
As we have repented of the heart idolatry, we began to make behavioral changes. For example, we began a small group of “fitness friends.“
Join our health and fitness Facebook Group here.
Additionally, we began to meet twice per week to workout in our “weekly-boot-camp-come-at-your-own-risk-exercise-program”. This is an on-going event.
For my friends who live around the world, please talk to a trusted friend. Ask them for accountability and begin mapping out a plan of repentance. Join our Facebook Group and let’s connect. Let us serve you.
Back in October, it seemed impossible to lose weight. It was even more discouraging that I could not run 1/2 mile.
But there was grace for that. God is good.
