When God spoke in the beginning (Genesis 1) he brought order to chaos. The world was a chaotic mess. And then God spoke. And when he did things began to happen. Quickly! The chaos began to take shape. The world was aligning. It was becoming logical. It was making sense now.
To look at the chaotic world before God spoke order into it was disconcerting, hopeless and functionally useless. There needed to be intervention. The world could not evolve itself into a happy, stable state. Someone from the outside needed to come alongside the spiraling mess and set it upright.
God spoke. Chaos left. Order ruled the day! And God said, “It is good!”
Welcome to the world of counseling.
My clients come to me with varying degrees of chaos in their lives. Something is out of whack and they are seeking outside intervention with the hope that order can come to their chaos.
And the real good news for my clients is that the words I use are not my words. I’m afraid my words would be the football equivalent of piling on. (That’s a penalty for my non-sports fans.) However, God is a speaking God and he not only spoke “in the beginning“ but he is still speaking today. It is amazing.
God has left us with his word to speak into our chaos so we can be reshaped into orderly people.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (ESV)
A good counselor is thinking God’s thoughts and sharing God’s words to their friends.
